Spirit of Monmouth RC members enjoyed another busy week of racing, parkruns and club activities, with runners representing the club across a variety of events while continuing to rack up impressive mileage and personal achievements.
The week's competitive action began with Kyrby Brown taking part in the Run Thorpe Park 10K. Running around the famous theme park, Kyrby completed the event in 1 hour 16 minutes, collecting personal records along the way and adding another successful race to the club's growing list of achievements.
At the Cotswolds Individual Team Relay, Renske Bouwens and Marina Wright represented local colours. Renske delivered a particularly strong performance on her run leg, while Marina continued her consistent form in an event that combined running with triathlon competition.
Meanwhile, Helen Dunn travelled to Cardiff for the Cardiff 10K, producing what were estimated to be her best efforts over both 5K and two-mile distances. Her performance demonstrated excellent preparation and form, reflecting the benefits of consistent training throughout recent weeks.
Elsewhere, Louise Heartree, racing under the name Looby Hearts, completed the challenging Tydfilians Roman Run. The event combined demanding terrain with significant climbing, providing another example of Spirit runners embracing difficult challenges beyond standard road races.
Club training sessions remained a major feature of the week. Tuesday night's threshold session at Chippenham Fields saw runners tackle four seven-minute efforts after an energetic warm-up. Strong performances came from Tom Chinnick, Matthew Visser, Michael Visser, Liberty Barlow and others, while social pace groups ensured runners of all abilities could take part.
Thursday's club run moved to the Kymin, where members faced steep trails and substantial elevation. Runners including Renske Bouwens, David Mather, Cathy Fletcher, Tom Chinnick, Matthew Visser, Michael Visser, Rachel Waters and Helen Shepherd enjoyed a challenging but rewarding evening on the hills above Monmouth.
The parkrun community was particularly active. At Chippenham Playing Fields, Brian Evans led the Spirit contingent with a quick 23:44, while Rachel Waters continued her strong form with a top-ten gender finish. Touring parkrunners travelled further afield, with Nick Sloper celebrating his 50th different parkrun location at Cheltenham alongside members of the Visser family and Julie Gee.
Several members achieved notable milestones. Renske Bouwens completed her 50th parkrun at Mallards Pike, marking the occasion by finishing first in her age category and third female overall. Holly Janes-Thomas recorded a 30-kilometre personal best as part of a demanding 20-mile trail run, while numerous club members continued to collect personal records and segment achievements throughout the week.
The club's mileage leaderboard was topped by Vicky Roberts with 37.1 miles, followed by Holly Janes-Thomas and Keith Penny. Keith also led the elevation standings after accumulating more than 2,600 feet of climbing.
Overall, the week highlighted the breadth of activity within Spirit of Monmouth RC, from road races and trail events to parkrun tourism, club training nights and individual milestones. Members continued to combine strong performances with a supportive club atmosphere, making it another highly successful week for the blue-and-yellow club.
