Monmouth firm Mandarin Slate Ltd has been fined in excess of £10,000 for failing to comply with environmental law.

The firm, an importer and retailer of natural stone and slate tiles, was ordered to pay £10,550 for failing to comply with waste packaging legislation.

The company has a head office and warehouse in Monmouth and seven showrooms throughout the UK and one in France.

Mandarin Slate Ltd pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the law.  Under UK Packaging Regulations businesses with a turnover of more than £2m that handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year must register with the Environment Agency or a packaging compliance scheme.

The Packaging Regulation sets out that the business must recover or recycle a specified amount of packaging each year and ensures that this is carried out.

Before the Packaging Regulations were introduced in 1997, only 30% of packaging waste in the UK was recycled.  By 2007 that proportion had doubled.  And as the UK creates over ten million tonnes of packaging waste each year, it's a significant result.

Abergavenny Magistrates Court fined the company £6,000 and ordered it to pay the Environment Agency £2,304 in compensation for the unpaid registration fees and full costs of  £2,231.

Environment Agency Wales said   "This sends a clear message to companies that they must be aware of their responsibilities under these and other environmental regulations as failing to do so can lead to prosecution.

"Information about all environmental regulations can be found on our website and we are happy to advise businesses on what they need to do to comply with the law and also protect the environment."
