TRELLECH Primary School's Millennium mural was unveiled at a special ceremony.
The mural, which runs the entire length of the hall, was produced as a result of the School being awarded an Arts for All Lottery grant of £2,198 by the Arts Council for Wales. Trellech Community Council donated a further £200 for the project.
Pupils from Year Six did drawings and sketches of various aspects of their local environment. These included buildings and symbols which represented the five schools that closed to make the present Trellech School.
Summer Artwork workshops run by Helen Williams and Sian Burns during the summer holidays were attended by more than 70 pupils and members of the local community. The sketches were transferred to a brightly coloured background and the mural was assembled and mounted high on the wall of the school hall.
Guests at the unveiling included local MP Huw Edwards, representatives of the school governors, Vicar Rev Sandra Howells, the head of art at Monmouth Comprehen-sive School and other members of the local community.
The mural is dedicated to Emma Hall, a much loved pupil who attended the school between September 1994 and July 1999. As a lasting memorial, a butterfly, the symbol which her family and friends associate with Emma, has been added to the mural alongside the drawing of the Preaching Cross sited in Trellech Churchyard. The unveiling was performed by Emma's mother, Mrs Karen Hall, and Headteacher Mrs Linda Beavan.
Drawings on which the mural is based are currently on display in the children's section of Monmouth Library and will shortly be on display in Chepstow Library. Many of the drawings are also on display in the School foyer with a book showing the project in progress.
Anyone who wishes to see the mural is very welcome and may arrange an appointment by contacting the School on 01600 860395.
