THE charity trust that oversees the Savoy Theatre is looking for someone with financial skills to become part of the charity.

Monmouth Savoy Trust’s current treasurer is standing down next year and its members are seeking someone to join the board and take on the voluntary role.

The treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial management of the historic and succesful theatre and cinema, which is administered in line with Charity Commission requirements.

The current trust rescued the Savoy from an uncertain future and saved it for the community when it was formed in 2010.

Since then, the 360-seat venue has hosted some amazing live performances, including from many of the nation’s top comedians such as Michael McIntyre, Al Murray, Lee Evans, Dom Joly, Jack Dee, Jenny Eclair, Reginald D Hunter, Josh Widdecombe, Russell Kane, Mark Watson and Rich Hall.

Its patrons include Sir Tony Robinson, Griff Rhys Jones, Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson and stargazer Russell Grant.

It shows the latest films daily, and won the Theatre of the Year award in 2019.

Dating back to 1926 and based on the site of Wales’ earliest known theatre, the previous building first hosted films in 1910 before being bought by a major cinema chain and demolished and rebuilt in the 1920s.

Anyone who wants to become part of the dedicated group of volunteers and maintain the theatre that has become an integral part of Monmouth’s life should contact Barbara Spence via [email protected] or Lin Waters on 07815 750827

The closing date for applications is November 30.
