Motorists in Monmouthshire are being urged to plan ahead as a trio of short‑term traffic restrictions take effect this month, affecting communities from Monkswood to Botany Bay and Shirenewton.
On Rumble Street, Monkswood, a one‑day closure will take place on March 6, with the road shut from its junction with the A472 for around 125 metres to allow essential poling works to be carried out safely. The closure will operate between 8am and 5pm, with a diversion sending vehicles via the A472 and Cefn Mawr Lane.
Meanwhile, in Botany Bay, Whitelye Road will be closed on March 5 for BT fibre installation. The works affect a 190‑metre stretch beginning approximately 150 metres from its junction with Trellech Road, operating between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Traffic will be diverted via Whitelye Road, Ninewells Road, Bargin Wood Road and Trellech Road.
Further south, a temporary reduced speed limit will be introduced on Crick Road, Shirenewton, on March 9 as the carriageway was restricted to a single lane under signal control for MJ Quinn poling works. The speed limit will drop from 60mph to 40mph over a 420‑metre stretch beginning about 155 metres from its junction with Old Crick Road. The restriction will run from 8am to 5pm.
Residents and motorists in Llanfair Discoed also due to face a short but necessary road closure as Monmouthshire County Council carries out essential works on the route between Llanvair Discoed and Lower Cwm Mill which is set to take place on March 10, operating between 8am and 5pm, to allow MJ contractors to complete safety‑critical works.
The affected stretch covers around 85 metres, situated 2.11km north of the A48 junction, with access maintained for properties along the route. A diversion was provided via Great Llanmartin Road, the R113 Castroggi Brook link to the A48, Crick Road, Red House Lane, and the continuation of the C62.4 towards Shirenewton.

Monmouthshire County Council said each scheme was necessary to ensure essential utility upgrades could be delivered safely, with access for fronting properties maintained wherever possible. The council is advising drivers to follow diversion signage, allow extra time for rural journeys, and stay alert for further temporary orders as infrastructure improvements continue across the county.
