SIR,
A link with the life of Monmouth in the 1930s has been broken with the passing of Gilwyn Rich of Trevor Bowen Court.
Gilwyn was very young and living at Gwehelog, near Usk, when his family split up and he was put in the care of the Childrens' Home, Cartref, St James Square and attended Priory Street Boys School. Later on he was able to join his mother in Hereford.
He served in the army in the war and saw active service in Burma. After the war he was employed by the Great Western Railway and spent most of his time at Tintern Station where he was responsible for the milk churns, which local farmers brought to the station.
When the railway station closed down he went to work for Monmouthshire County Council as a roadman looking after the grass verges in the Llanishen area where he and his wife lived.
When his wife died he came to live at Trevor Bowen Court and could be seen early most mornings shopping in the town.
