Fundraising for a Rogiet tot to walk unaided has reached £30,000. Countless events, mountain climbs, gruelling sponsored walks and cake sales have all brought Ruby Atkins and her family to this point. Three-year-old Ruby has bilateral cerebral palsy meaning her ability to walk unaided is restricted. The toddler is in need of an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) which would reduce the spasticity in Ruby's legs. Combined with physiotherapy, the treatment will enable her to walk unaided. As the operation is not funded on the NHS, Ruby's family and friends are required to raise £40,000 for the treatment. Ruby's father, Antony Atkins, said he was overwhelmed by the support received from the community. He said: "Reaching £30,000 is such a massive achievement, we've been blown away by the amount of continued support from friends and the local community who have repeatedly come out and supported the various events that have taken place. "With Ruby due to receive a course of Botox treatment in September followed by her second consultation at Great Ormond Street hospital in November, it's such a relief to see that we are so close to reaching our target. "It's been such a busy month with Barrie Johnson completing the Welsh Three Peaks, Jo Hill organising a day of activities at her workplace, Sian Denning and Michelle Roche holding a quiz night at Rogiet Non-Political Club and Rachael (Atkins) with friends a tea party at Redwick Village Hall." The next eight weeks will be incredibly busy for fundraisers with a bike ride from Paris to Magor and a 100km walk in the pipeline. Local band The Beat Goes On will be performing live at Dewstow Golf Club on Saturday 16th August to raise money for Ruby. Tickets are available at Dewstow Golf Club, Nathan James Estate Agents and Chappell Pharmacy. To donate to Ruby's fund, visit: http://www.justgiving.com/rubyAtkins">www.justgiving.com/rubyAtkins
