ON a sunny Sunday afternoon back in September, The Rotary Club of Monmouth hosted their 43rd annual Raft Race and for the third consecutive year, worked in partnership with St David's Foundation Hospice Care to create a fabulous, fun-filled event. Sixty-five teams worked together to build their rafts and then race down the cold waters of the River Wye, raising a fabulous amount of sponsorship along the way. In addition to being entertained by the colourful crews that took to the water, the crowd were treated to a variety of family events. At a recent Rotary meeting Chief Executive, Emma Saysell received a cheque for £11,000 as a result of the 2007 race. Norman Williams (race co-ordinator for The Rotary Club of Monmouth) thanked all who participated in last year's event and took the opportunity to announce that the 2008 event would again be in aid of St. David's Foundation. He urged all previous teams, local clubs, pubs, businesses and groups of friends to enter the 2008 race and make the 44th year a very special event. "The Monmouth Rotary Raft Race is a key event in the Monmouth calendar," said Norman, "It's part of what makes our town such a special place to live." Emma Saysell, St. David's Chief Executive, said, "We are thrilled to be chosen by the Rotary Club for selecting St. David's to be their charity for the 2008 event, we are very appreciative of all the hard work that goes in to organising this fantastic event. "It costs over £4.1 million to provide our service, 80% of which is raised through the generosity of the local community. "Without the kind support of organisations such as the Rotary, it would be impossible for us to continue to provide and develop the services we offer local people." Entry to the race on Sunday September 7th costs £75.00 for a team of 4-10, plus a commitment to raise a further minimum £100 sponsorship towards the work of St. David's Foundation - please visit, http://www.MRRR.co.uk">www.MRRR.co.uk, call 01633 271364 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected] for an entry form.
