A fundraiser for the Fire Fighters charity and Ukraine saw the crews from Monmouth Fire and Rescue Station rolling out hoses from 6am until 4pm.

It took place at their open day on Saturday, May 28, when the public had the chance to see an RTC demo, with appliances from Malpas and Maindee assisting Monmouth crews and an opportunity to chat with SARA, Gwent Police, the South Wales Fireboat Service and St John Ambulance and see the emergency equipment used in a callout.

Meanwhile, throughout the day, the Monmouth crews were rolling out hoses to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity and the Ukraine appeal.

All firefighters must participate in extensive training before they are put on duty fighting fires. A portion of that training involves learning how to roll a fire hose. There are several methods of rolling a hose that can be employed, depending on the situation and the crews here did the straight roll.

The aim was 844 rolls to equal the length of a marathon, 26 miles: each length of hose is 25 metres. By 8am, they had already rolled 270 hose reels, the equivalent of over 8 miles. Their goal of 844 rolls was broken by 2.30pm but the crews kept the pace up and carried on until the end of the open day.

They ran out a total of 1,000 lengths of hose that day which totals fractionally over 30 miles worth!

The firecrews would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came. On the day they made £578 which will be split with the sponsor money toward the Fire Fighters Charity and Ukraine Appeal!
