Police fear that man who fell from the Wye Bridge in Chepstow on Tuesday afternoon is now dead.

The man has been named locally as Gareth Mutlow, although police are unable to confirm his identity.

Gwent Police have called off their multi-agency search of the water which involved The Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) Inshore Rescue boat, the Coastguard at Chepstow and the Avon and Somerset police helicopters.

"Following consultation with experts and owing to the weather conditions and the passage of time, it is sadly now believed that the man who fell into the water is deceased and the active search of the water is now complete.

"The death of the man is not being treated as suspicious," say police.

"It's believed the identity of the man has been established and Gwent Police family liaison officers are supporting the family at this difficult time."
