Concerned local residents met The Secretary of State for Wales, the Rt. Hon. David Davies, MP for Monmouth, and MCC Councillor Rachel Buckler, representative of the Devauden Ward, to discuss their concerns about the dangers of speeding vehicles that blight the lives of those living in Llansoy.

The local residents presented a petition signed by many living in and around Llansoy to David Davies, expressing their desire to see measures put in place to make the village a safe place to live.

The MP and Councillor heard of residents’ near misses; including children being in danger, residents walking along the road and nearly being run over, and cars overtaking recklessly endangering people crossing the road.

David Davies said ‘The number of people who have come to meet us today shows how strongly the residents of Llansoy, and the surrounding area, feel about this issue. Llansoy will be part of the Wales wide national speed limit for 30mph zone reduction to 20mph in September 2023. Whilst I strongly feel a blanket reduction in all areas in Wales is problematic it is evident in this situation it is badly needed to help the situation for local residents in Llansoy.’

‘Whilst the Go Safe speed vans have stepped up their sessions in Llansoy, and in doing so have caught substantial numbers of speeding motorists, there are still constant problems with dangerous and antisocial driving through the village, adversely affecting the close-knit community of Llansoy,’ added Rachel Buckler. ‘We have duly noted the strength of feeling about this. David Davies and I will work with the residents to make sure a multi-faceted approach is looked at. Issues such as the extending of the 20mph limit and reducing the speed as the village is approached will be looked at.’

Rachel Buckler continued, ‘Residents came up with some excellent suggestions to creatively mitigate the problems they have faced. It was agreed that the way forward was to have a constructive site visit with the Highways Department of Monmouthshire County Council.’

‘It was a positive meeting with residents and good to hear how a rural community can come together. I was pleased to be able to meet everyone and discuss this important issue,’ said David Davis MP.
