SIR,

Driving through Monmouth on return from holiday in

France the contrast could not have been more striking.

Every town and village in Brittany is adorned with the

most colourful and often breathtaking displays of flowers.

What do we have in Monmouth?  Very little.  There are

some hanging baskets from a few valiant businesses but

the town's large containers filled with green, grey

and  purple look distinctly boring and miserable.

The town looks quite dull and unwelcoming.  Why is it that

a small village in France can put on such dazzling displays

when we can't?

Why is it that Raglan, Usk and Ross-on-Wye can achieve

such brilliant results and Monmouth looks third rate in

comparison?
