SIR,
I was pleased to see the viewpoint of Bob Dumford regarding public toilets in Monmouth.
Apparently, there is no law that local authorities have to supply these necessary conveniences.
Because of public cuts I understood Monmouth Town Council had precepted and prepared to operate the Agincourt Street public toilet. Is this still the case?
Hopefully the water problem of the WC can be resolved quickly. Members of the public and our own taxpayers deserve this convenience.
I know Age Cymru Wales have, and are campaigning strongly on this matter.
A grant has been given by the Welsh Assembly to local authorities and small businesses encouraged to apply to local authorities for £500 to open their toilets for use of the public.
Obviously not enough, but encouragingly many businesses have applied throughout Wales.
Monmouth Action 50+ is supportive of Age Cymru's campaign for public toilets to be kept open.
Recently, a demonstration was held outside the Hayes public toilets, Cardiff.
Several of our delegates sit on Age Cymru committees, and can be influential on issues pertaining to the Wales Strategy for Older People.
Our community and county councillors should be aware of this long term planned strategy, which is so important for an increasing older population.
The Monmouthshire county councillor Geoff Burrows, being an elected Champion of Older People, I trust has spoken up in support.
