SIR,

It has been several weeks since my last letter, explaining the illegal erection of gates across the public right of way south of Wye Bridge Street, along the river bank, part of the Wye Valley Walk.

I say illegal because I have been informed by the rights of way authority that the gates across the full width of the entrance are unauthorised and should not be there.

The Planning Department has confirmed these gates were not on the original planning application.

For some reason, Monmouth Boys School has been given a considerable amount of time to check the historical records to try and find some non existent proof that there were gates across the entrance, although I have been informed by both planners and rights of way that there have never been any gates at this point in living memory.

They would obviously like more information, so any local people who can help should write to Mr Ian Brandley , the Public Rights of Way Officer, at County Hall, NP44 2XH.

They could also write to other people, involved in this issue, at the same address.

It is my belief that the Haberdashers are allowed to build anything, anywhere, in our town. But to be allowed to illegally interfere with and obstruct accesses and the right to roam is not good enough.

Please stick up for your rights and your children's rights and ask who actually owns and runs Monmouth: Is it the County Council or the Haberdashers?

R.W.Bradley (Monmouth)
