PLANS to build public toilets on Thomas Street were discussed by town councillors last Wednesday (23rd July). A provisional budget of £62,000 has been set aside for the project, which it is hoped will eventually see the opening of toilets opposite the bus station. Building work to 11 Thomas Street will cost approximately £50,000-£60,000. The town council has an earmarked reserve of £26,500 for the works and Monmouthshire County Council has made a contribution of £14,000. A spokesperson for the council said: "The meeting considered the potential cost of the works and the current funding provision. It was noted that the provision of a public convenience at the bus station was a long standing aspiration of the local community and a priority for the town council which should be progressed. "Members noted that the additional funding required for the project could be found initially from reserves and that there was the potential to reinstate the reserve at future budget setting." The project has been delayed by uncertainty about whether a Highways street works licence is needed. Councillors decided to apply for the licence to cover potential work involving the pavement or road, to avoid future delay. This comes at a further cost of £385.
