A fire which swept through a Chepstow primary school last Friday (3rd May) is being treated as suspicious by police.

The blaze, which started in the early hours of the morning, destroyed a building at Thornwell Primary School as well as hundreds of pounds worth of new equipment.

The infants building, which contained three classrooms, a nursery unit and infant hall, also held pupils' work and PE kits.

As daylight broke on Friday morning, stunned parents gathered to see the damage as firefighters continued to tackle the blaze.

Headteacher Linda Davies had the job of accomodating the school's 125 infants and 60 nursery children, who were due to return from their half-term holiday on Monday.

School staff and council officers worked through the night, over the weekend and into Monday preparing the school to re-open.

The school's 160 junior pupils and most of the infants were back on Tuesday. They must share the surviving facilities.
