SIR,

What a wonderful place Monmouth is and a

wonderful staff at The Beacon!

We would like to thank everybody there, across the

miles, that made Karen and Cherril so very welcome. We

are still a bit teary eyed.

A quick note on the rugby photo in The Beacon on

September 10. The gentleman standing next to Eric

Meredith is my dad, Lewis Evans, and the name of the

player was Robby Burns, who played with me in the

services in Malta and Tripoli.

Percy Tyler, a great prop forward, sent me over a

home made walking stick. Thanks mate. We must be

getting on. Love to you all from Queensland in Australia.

Raglan connection

SIR,

Did anyone else notice?   BBC2  8th October, 2008.

Laurence Llewellyn Bowen in "Who Do You Think You Are"

showed 1866 birth certificate of ancestor, Ada Twist,

father Roger Twist of Raglan, Monmouthshire.

A former master mariner he had been a Ship's

Chandler in Newport.

                                            Savoy sound

SIR,

Happily I can report that I saw "The Duchess" at the

Savoy Cinema this week and the sound quality was

perfectly fine.

Having accepted Mr Bignell's invitation to go along

there and meet his consultant sound engineer on

September 11, I understand that much work has been

done in this regard, indeed I have now noticed this is

stated in the weekly ads.

It's great the threat of closure has now been lifted,

however I am glad I raised the sound question as no-one

else seemed to have done so. You had two interesting

responses.

Perhaps now all those who came once and never

returned will come back again.  I do hope so.
