MONMOUTH community organisations and members of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) – (RMRE(M)) – will be working more closely together thanks to a £30,000 grant from the Armed Forces Community Covenant.

The grant, which was presented on Friday 20th March, will ensure that residents and visitors to the town will recognise and remember the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community.

The application for funds was made by walking group, Monmouth Walkers Are Welcome,

This will be achieved by the installation of interpretation panels at the Regimental HQ at Monmouth Castle and a trail of Poppy Plaques from the Castle to the site of the old Troy railway station, where there will also be an art installation.

Armed Forces personnel from the RMRE(M) will be involved in the installation of the panels and the art installation, doing preparatory groundwork, using skills that they normally employ while in training and on operations.

The Poppy Trail, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, will consist of ceramic plaques, marking the route taken by soldiers of the RMRE(M) as they "marched off to war" in August 1914.
