SIR In reply to questions from one Monmouth resident and swimmer, who was concerned about how committed the County Council really is to the provision of a new facility after demolishing our much used and loved community pool, Peter Fox, Leader of the Council, wrote 'Let me assure you that the Council has formally agreed to the replacement pool being provided. The Council has identified and supported internal funding for a 25metre 4 lane pool. We expect to get confirmation from Wales Government shortly of their contribution to the project.'  Splendid, but that was written on October 4th and since then it has all gone rather quiet. Peter Fox deftly transfers the responsibility for whether the much needed new pool will actually be built from the County Council to the Welsh Assembly Government; this looks like a transparently political move to shift any future blame away from the County Council, if the WAG funding is not forthcoming and the new pool is abandoned. We all hope that this will not happen.  However, Councillors should be reminded that the memories of the many Monmouth residents and their families, who use the pool for education, for their health and for fun are not so short as may sometimes be wished. At election time, it will be remembered who it was that promised, back in February this year, to re-build our pool, regardless of external funding. Jo Binmore Whitebrook
