A former Monmouth police cadet has been given a surprise reward in recognition of his services to fighting crime in Poland.
Peter Watkins, originally of Rockfield Road, was presented the Medal of Merit for Police during an event in Nowy Sacz, north of Slovakia.
He had no idea he was to receive the honour until called forward during a ceremony held on Polish National Police Day.
"The first time I was told what was going to happen was when the ceremony had started," said Peter.
"I was called forward and a Polish police officer pinned the medal on my chest in the presence of the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk."
Peter started his career as a cadet straight after leaving school in Monmouth in 1960.
He became an officer in 1963 and after six years he moved to Bristol where he served for 34 years in the Avon and Somerset constabulary, finishing as a Chief Inspector.
He was then taken on in a senior project management role by the force, staying for 17 years before his retirement in March of this year.
During his time in project management, Peter played a prominent role in setting up a 'cross-border co-operation' with Poland.
