A search by Gloucestershire Police is continuing after a man is believed to have fallen or jumped into the River Wye at Chepstow.

The alarm was raised at approximately 12.45am on Monday (9th April) and a search began shortly afterwards.

Enquiries have been made to establish the man's identity, he is believed to be in his 20s from the local area.

His family are being supported and updated as the search continues.

He entered the water from the A48 road bridge between Sedbury and Chepstow, and organisations involved in the search so far include both Gloucestershire and Gwent Police, the fire service, the Severn Area Rescue Association, the ambulance service and the Coastguard.

A police helicopter has been used to search from the air, and extensive searches on the water have also been carried out. 

The search is also incorporating the use of thermal imaging along the river bank, however as yet the man has not been found.

Superintendent Emma Ackland, of Gloucestershire Constabulary, said: "There is real concern for the man believed to have fallen into the water and as time passes that concern is growing.

"An extensive search on the water and along the river banks has been conducted.

"If anyone has any further information that would help the search can they please contact police on 101."
