SIR,

It is always disappointing to read about problems of anti- social behaviour in the Monmouth area, such as that outlined in the letter in last week's Beacon.

During the summer my staff together with our partners such as Monmouthshire County Council have worked tirelessly to drive down anti-social behaviour and we are continuing that work into the autumn months, particularly around Halloween and Bonfire night.

Incidents of anti- social behaviour in Monmouth have fallen by over 21 per cent since last year and I, along with my team, am committed to reducing that number even further.

In response to the incident mentioned in last week's letter, no calls regarding incidents of an anti- social nature were received during the times given on 8th October.

Only one call was received on 9th October and a number of youths were spoken to in relation to that incident.

Of course this does not mean that the incident didn't take place but it highlights the need for the community to report anti-social behaviour at the time it takes place in order for us to deal with the problems as they occur.

I am very aware of the devastating impact anti-social behaviour can have on the local community, but it is important to note that Monmouth is an extremely safe place to live and visit.

While we will not always get it right, I can assure you we will work tirelessly to improve our visibility in the community and our response to incidents of anti-social behaviour.
