POLICE believe that a 74-year-old Wye Valley man who collapsed and died in a town centre street could have done so as a result of injuries sustained three days earlier when a car ‘slightly mounted’ the pavement and he fell after stepping out of the way.
West Mercia Police have established that around 6pm on Monday, July 21, the man stepped out of the way of a car on the pavement in a narrow street, and fell over.
At around 4.20pm on Thursday, July 24, officers were called to Broad Street to reports of a man suffering a medical episode.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have confirmed that the man involved in the incident on Monday is the same man who died three days later.
West Mercia Police are now appealing for witnesses to the original incident, so as to help them better understand the circumstances around the two incidents.
Detective Inspector Ben Pearson, said: “Firstly our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who sadly died.
“We’ve been made aware that a car may have mounted the pavement slightly when travelling down Copse Cross Street. The street is incredibly narrow which causes drivers to often need to mount the pavement.
“We are now keen to speak to anyone who was in the Copse Cross Street area at that time, who may have witnessed such an incident happen.
“I would also encourage anyone who has a dashcam to review the footage from July 21 to see if they captured anything.
“We are also keen to speak the driver of the car to get a better understanding of what happened and would encourage them to also get in touch.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact DI Pearson by calling 01432 347277 quoting incident number 334i of July 24.
