The chairman of the Institution of Chartered Engineers Wales, Professor Bob Lark, recently presented a commemorative plaque to the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) to recognise their construction and maintenance of the Inglis bridge in Monmouth.

The Inglis bridge, the vehicle bridge that crosses the Rover Monnow at Vauxhall Fields, was originally designed for use in combat conditions and this one is the only trafficked type of its kind left in existence.

It was constructed by the Regiment in 1931 and subsequently re-decked and refurbished in 1998. The bridge, designed during the First World War, is named after its designer, Prof Sir Charles Edward Inglis.

The plaque is soon to be fitted adjacent to the bridge.
