PLANS for Olympic cyclist Geraint Thomas to convert his Mathern home into a wedding venue has received objections from residents.
The application seeks to change the use of St Tewdric’s House and its outbuilding from a residential property into a wedding venue.
The proposal, which is available online, has generated 33 objections from residents. Mathern Community Council has also recommended the plans for refusal.
Plans involve the adaptation of the stable courtyard to create wedding reception facilities with the existing lodge and ‘main house’ becoming wedding guest accommodation.
Five guest rooms have been proposed for the main house and three for the lodge.
If plans are approved next Tuesday (1st March) it is anticipated the venue would generate 24 new part-time jobs.
Despite Monmouthshire County Council’s (MCC) planning committee recommending the plans for approval, the site has still generated many objections from residents.
Concerns include the potential increase in vehicle and traffic movement along Mathern Road and the noise pollution from the venue. Other residents worry it could turn into a seven-day facility.
Reference was made by Mathern residents to a recent wedding party held at the property which caused disturbance to pets and farm animals.
Residents worry that noise complaints and traffic issues would continue throughout the year if the proposals are approved.
MP David Davies requested the concerns of residents be carefully considered before a decision is made.
