Drivers in Monmouthshire are being warned to expect delays this spring as a key stretch of the A4136 Staunton Road undergoes resurfacing and improvement works. Monmouthshire County Council has confirmed that a temporary traffic order, which came into force on February 13, 2026, will allow essential repairs to take place over the coming weeks.
Although the order can legally remain in place for up to 18 months, the council says the project is expected to run only until March 31, 2026, with the most disruptive phase confined to two separate five‑day overnight closures. These closures will take place between 8pm and 6am, limiting impact on daytime traffic, when alternative traffic‑management measures will keep the road partially accessible.
The works, designed to improve the carriageway and upgrade associated highway infrastructure, will require the temporary closure of a short section of the A4136 from its junction with Mayhill for just under four metres. Access for residents and affected properties will be maintained wherever safe to do so.
A signed diversion will guide motorists via the A40 and A4136, in both directions. The council stresses the measures are essential to ensure the safety of road users and workers while the improvements are carried out.
Motorists are advised to plan journeys carefully, allow extra time during the closure periods and stay alert to on‑site signage announcing the precise dates of each overnight shutdown.
Tintern Road to close for one day
Motorists in Tintern face short‑term disruption this February as Monmouthshire County Council prepares to close part of Trellech Road for essential BT fibre installation works. The temporary traffic order, coming into force on 12 February 2026, allows the closure to operate between 9.30am and 3.30pm, though the council expects the job to be completed within the same day.
The affected section runs from the junction with Park Glade to the junction with Sylvan View, with access for residents to be maintained where safe to do so. The council says the closure is necessary to ensure the fibre‑upgrade works can be carried out safely for both workers and road users.
A lengthy diversion will guide vehicles around the village via the A466, Forge Road, Llanishen to Tintern Cross (R94), B4293, Ceciliford, Back Road, Catbrook Road, and Whitelye Road, with the same route operating in reverse.
The closure forms part of ongoing upgrades to improve digital infrastructure across the region.
