Motorists are being urged to plan ahead as a wide-ranging programme of temporary road closures gets under way across Monmouthshire, with essential safety, water and broadband works set to affect villages, beauty spots and town streets over the coming weeks.
Monmouthshire County Council has confirmed that the closures will be in place while BT carries out fibre cabling and poling works, urgent tree safety operations are completed, and Welsh Water undertakes key infrastructure repairs.
In one of the county’s most popular visitor areas, Kymin Road at The Kymin is already affected by restrictions which will remain in place until the end of May. The closure, needed to allow urgent tree removal to be carried out safely, covers a short section near Staunton Road. As the road is a no‑through route, no formal diversion has been put in place, but access for residents will be maintained, with motorists advised to expect short delays.
Drivers in Trellech Grange will also be affected later this month, with Gethley Road closing on April 23 between 9.30am and 3.30pm. The temporary closure is required for BT fibre cabling works, with a signed diversion in place via Tintern Road, the B4293 and surrounding rural routes.
Further disruption is expected in the Llanhennock area from April 27 to April 30, when part of Glen Usk Road will close during daytime hours for telecommunications cabling. The closure affects a stretch of around one kilometre, with a lengthy signed diversion routing traffic through Newbridge on Usk and nearby country lanes.
Tintern village itself will also see disruption on April 23, when Forge Road closes from 8am to 6pm to allow poling works to be carried out. The closure runs between Glynwood Lane and Glyn View, with traffic diverted via Brookside and local roads through the village.
In Monmouth town centre, drivers and pedestrians are being alerted to short-term disruption on Chippenhamgate Street on April 19. A short section near Glendower Street will be closed while Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water carries out essential works. As with other no‑through routes, access will still be possible, although brief delays should be expected.
The council says that reasonable access will be maintained for properties wherever possible throughout the programme of works. Motorists are advised to follow signed diversion routes carefully, allow extra time for journeys and take particular care when travelling along narrow rural roads during the closures.
