ST Cadoc’s Court in Raglan, once the first purpose built elderly care community facility in Monmouthshire has been demolished.

Monmouthshire Housing Association are looking to secure funding to develop the site and provide 10 affordable houses.

St Cadoc’s Court was constructed in the late 1960s when amenities were shared between residents and the building welcomed its first resident in 1970,

But over the years, the building has deteriorated and residents have been moved to more updated facilities and it was decided that the building would not lend itself to re-design.

David Morris, who managed St Cadoc’s Court, told Raglan Community Council last year that a decision has been made by MHA’s board to close St Cadoc’s Court, due to the number of empty flats which MHA were unable to relet. He also explained that the building will not lend itself to re-design. MHA had been liaising closely with residents at St Cadoc’s Court and their families and had also undertaken property surveys on a number of properties in the county.

Gavin Howells, development manager for MHA told the Beacon this week that they are currently in the process of demolishing the former sheltered housing block at St Cadoc’s. He said: “The building was no longer fit for purpose and was for all intents and purposes obsolete as a sheltered housing facility for older persons.

“Following a detailed options appraisal, MHA’s preferred proposal is to replace the accommodation with family homes and a mix of two and three bed houses. We will be approaching the local planning authority in the new year to discuss the principles of the development.

“We have had positive discussions with Raglan Community Council and will continue to keep them up to date as we progress the scheme design and detail. All being well, and following a successful planning process, we hope to start new construction work in the new year.”
