THE Penallt Junior tournament was held last Sunday morning in glorious weather. The organisers were very pleased to have 21 juniors taking part. The competition was split into 3 groups according to ability. Group A and B played Round Robin competitions.
The group A competition was won by Helen Hodgkin with a clear lead of 5 points. The next 4 places were very closely contested with Alex Mitchell one point ahead of Simon Cope who was also one point ahead of Katriona Shrives and Tom Woodward.
The group B was even closer, Three competitors finished on ten points with a further two both on eight points, After two playoffs and a huge number of deuces David Garwood ended up just ahead of Judie Scarr. Dan Woodward was third, with Isobel Hart fourth, and Aneurin May fifth.
Luckily the group C competition didn't give the organisers such problems. Jack Scarr finished in the lead with Megan Rigby and Alex Moss close behind.
The organisers would like to thank the children and parents who acted as ball boys/girls, and parents who acted as scorers, and to say that it was a pleasure to run the tournament as all the players were so sporting.
Before the American tournament, an on site meeting was held by the committee, to discuss the installation of a new fence from the front boundary wall to the far end of the courts. This was agreed with Dick Hartly, and tenders have been called for.
The following American tournament was held, the winning place was shared by three players. Rosie Adams Mark Thornycroft, and Neill Woodward., as usual much enjoyed by all.
An EGM was called to discuss the resurfacing of the courts. Three tenders had been received and after long discussions it was decided to accept one of the tenders. The order has been given and weather permitting work should commence on Monday, September 25th. The courts will be out of commission for approximately two weeks. If the weather is not suitable during this time the final painting will be left till next year, in which case the courts will be left black, the lines being put in of course.
