SIR,

I felt privileged to be invited to the grand opening of Art in Penallt and was given the honour of introducing the speaker for the evening – Walter Keller.

The Inn at Penallt framed a picture of great food, excellent company and lively conversation; this set the tone for a very successful Art in Penallt weekend.

Walter Keeler is one of the UK's leading potters with an international reputation and his home and studio is right here in Monmouthshire, in Penallt. His work has been described as 'ambitious, intelligent and functional'. The same can be said for those who have worked throughout the year to put on this event.

Ambitious – this is their third year and each time it gets bigger and better, bringing artists and visitors together from all around the area.

Intelligent – this is not an amateur attempt but a professionally, well organised occasion pulled together by enthusiastic volunteers who love the arts.

Functional – this community enterprise has great purpose in bringing vibrancy and fellowship to the area and it raised money to support the vital work of Monmouth CAB.

As many may be aware MCC is in the process of discussing the budgetary pressures with residents during meetings they have organised throughout October.

They are talking about trying to do things differently, being innovative and entrepreneurial to meet the financial challenges that lie ahead. I am proud to announce that this entrepreneurial streak lies deep in the rural community of Trellech United and that Art in Penallt is a clear testament to its presence.

Debby Blakebrough

(County Councillor

for Trellech United)
