Monmouth Sports Ground has once again become the victim of graffiti vandalism.

Discovered on Thursday morning, August 25, by Sports Association volunteer, Andy Philpotts, the side and rear walls of the pavilion, as well as the rear wall of the grandstand, had been daubed in graffiti and it certainly wasn’t Banksy!

Monmouth Sports Association, which is made up of the local bowls, cricket, soccer, tennis and rugby clubs, all tirelessly work hard to maintain a facility which is fit for purpose and welcoming to visitors.

“With ever increasing financial pressures it is sole destroying to see such acts of vandalism, which have to be repaired out of Association resources” said chairman of the Sports Association, Andy Tabb.

“With Chippenham Fields Park Run now making the Sportsground its permanent home, it is even more vital to create a warm and welcoming venue for the hundreds of new users and visitors to the area” he added.

The Sports Association are fortunate in having established a link with the Gwent Probation Community Services group, who visit the Sportsground weekly to carry out general maintenance duties, together with the Monmouthshire County Council grounds maintenance team, under the watchful eye of Gordon Grey.

Andy Tabb said the were “deeply grateful” to Andy ‘Bennie’ Philpotts who upon discovering the graffiti, single-handedly applied two coats of paint to cover the offending obscenities.
