MADAM,
I was saddened to read the recent letter encouraging people to opt out of organ donation. Organ donation after death is such a simple and practical way to help others at no cost to yourself, and the Human Transplantation (Wales) Act is long overdue. Well done, Welsh Government.
There may be those for whom religious or other convictions make this a particularly sensitive issue for them personally, hence the ability to opt out, but this is not a good reason to promote fear and anxiety amongst the general population about keeping their bodies intact after death.
Even in the case of an untimely death, the possibility that another life has been saved can surely be a source of comfort.
When my mother died two years ago I was proud and pleased to discover a letter with her will to say that she wanted her body donated to medical research and education. It was a gift from her to future generations, and it felt like her indomitable spirit lived on. This goes a step further than organ donation, and contributes to developing the skills and knowledge that make our lives and those of our loved ones secure.
I can also report that my mother was cared for with professionalism and kindness until the end. Thank you Nevill Hall hospital. Visiting family from England envied our Welsh NHS.
