SIR,

I have read and re-read the letter from A V Smith several times and am just as mystified now as when I first read it.

He says that an orchard was planted on the village green, east of the dual carriageway, a year ago and that (in its defence) this was as legal as various developments such as the Waitrose car park or the dual carriageway itself.

Mr Smith does not seem to realise that neither the car park nor the dual carriageway are part of the village green as is the land of the new 'orchard' which is designated as part of the village green on the definitive map.

Is Mr Smith really saying that as (in his view) the car park, tennis courts, carriageway etc are 'illegal', that it is also acceptable for his team to plant an illegal orchard?

From what I understand, the orchard, unlike the dual carriageway, really is illegal, so for Mr Smith to criticise others for working on the construction of the new road is rich indeed.
