THE BBC's One Show 1000 entered Monmouth last Friday (23rd March) with a group of nine volunteers completing a mile each to cover the distance between the areas around Welsh Newton to Mitchel Troy.
In total the relay travelled from the Isle of Mull to The Mall, London in an effort to raise money for Sport Relief. Each runner passed the 'baton' on to the next with a friendly high five and the link continued across the country, taking nine days to complete.
Monmouthshire acted as the gateway to Wales on its route to Cardiff. Taking over from a group from Ross-on-Wye, the 'baton' was passed to the Monmouth group and participants followed a route along Hereford Road, Monnow Street and over the bridge towards Mitchel Troy.
Spirits ran high among the team as they received some support on the route. The group was made up of a range of Monmothians from members of the running club to a new mum and even a local doctor.
Beacon reporter Victoria Hallifax even dug out her running shoes and ran her mile through the town centre.
A second group then picked up the 'baton' in Mitchel Troy and carried on towards Newport. The run passed through Chepstow on its return trip to Bristol the following day with a group taking part there as well.
The One Show 1000 is already over half way to its target figure, with currently more than £28,000 donated, but if you would like to help them to the £50,000 mark, visit my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/theoneshow1000 and donate what you can.
