A 19-year-old-man remains in police custody following an assault in Monnow Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of assault after a 43-year-old man from Poole was admitted to hospital with injuries where he remains in a serious condition.

A 19-year-old has been released on conditional bail and a 21-year-old was released without charge.

Gwent Police are still investigating an assault in Monnow Street at around 1.15am on Sunday 26 June after a man was found unconscious and are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

Monnow Street and St John Street were closed for most of Sunday while scene of crime officers combed and photographed the pavement and road beside the town’s Halifax Bank, including its doorway.
