MRS OLWEN GRIFFITHS, a 98 year old organist, was presented with the Certificate of Merit for Church Music, on Sunday 11th April at Pen y clawdd Old School Hall.
Olwen has a lively interest in music, in particular Church and Welsh music and with more than eight decades of service she continues to play regularly.
Olwen began playing the piano in 1922 at eight years of age, when was living near the vicarage of St Martin's Church, Cwmyoy. Here she was introduced to classical music by the late Rev Thomas Williams. At thirteen, Olwen was asked to become organist by Rev Williams, who by then had recognised her musical ability. She also went on to conduct the church choir.
In 1954, Olwen married Bill Griffiths and moved to Lower Pen y clawdd to farm. It was then that she joined St Martin's Church, Pen y clawdd where she soon became the choir leader, before becoming the church organist. Olwen took over this role here over 40 years ago and at nearly 99 years old she continues to lead the musical worship. She also helps out at other churches in the Benefice.
