A pear tree has been planted in Monmouth's Nelson Garden by the garden's owner.

The tree will grow to mirror the 150-year-old one next to it and represents the first stage of a plan to restore the garden to its former glory.

Green-fingered members of U3A chose the tree from a nursery near Tenbury Wells and are panning to restore paths and borders, reshape the box hedges and eventually open an entrance from Monnow Street to one of the town's hidden gems.

Peter Winston, the garden's owner, said he was delighted to fund the planting of the pear tree and support the work being done in the garden.
