A "Choose Well" campaign has been launched in Monmouthshire to help people understand how they can make the best use of their local NHS.

Leaflets have been distributed to households, and posters to shops and other public premises, over the past few days to help spread the word.

Dr Brian Harries, GP from Dixton Road Surgery in Monmouth said: "I really welcome this initiative to provide more information so that local people can make the correct choice.

"Knowing how busy we all are these days this reminder will help people access the most appropriate help.

"It is not designed to stop people seeing their GP when it is appropriate, but will actually offer more choice."

Many illnesses such as sore throats, recent onset coughs, colds, hangovers or minor cuts and abrasions can be treated at home by using over the counter medicine, drinking plenty of fluids and having plenty of rest.

Information provided in the campaign ranges from self care to advice for those suffering from the most serious cases, where it can be necessary to use our emergency services.

There is also helpful information on the huge range of services available from the pharmacy, how to get the best from dental and GP services, as well as on-line resources such as the NHS symptom checker.

An app has been launched too for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. For more information, visit http://www.choosewellwales.org.uk">www.choosewellwales.org.uk
