Several options for the location and structure of Monmouth's new swimming pool have been released this week. County councillors will decide tomorrow (25th September) which option will be most suitable for the town's promised pool. Councillors are expected to select option 4a which would see the building of a 25-metre four-lane swimming pool with sauna and steam room with an estimated cost of £6 million. Monmouth's current swimming pool is to be knocked down to make way for a new building for Monmouth Comprehensive School as part of the Welsh Government's 21st century school programme. The new pool would be built adjacent to the existing leisure centre which is said to increase staff efficiency and use of resources. If councillors approve this option further market costs and tests need to be sought including confirmation of funding from the Welsh Government. Negotiations are ongoing with the Welsh Government to fund the development of the pool with an outcome expected for the end of this month. Councillor Bob Greenland, cabinet member for innovation, enterprise, and leisure, said: "We are pleased that we have reached a preferred option to provide a new swimming pool in Monmouth. "We now need to do more work on these plans to ensure that we understand all of the remaining issues and critically the financial implications. "We are looking to maximise the investment we will make to provide the kind of facility Monmouth can be proud of."
