MONMOUTH residents have chosen their new town flag.

Flag A has won the flag competition with 40 per cent of the overall vote after more than 400 people voted for their favourite design.

The competition to design a flag for Monmouth was launched in May as part of the town's Agincourt 600 celebrations.

Launched on Wednesday 6th May, the competition encouraged entries for a flag that linked to famous elements of the town.

The entries were collated and a four flag shortlist was published on Wednesday 8th July for members of the public to vote for their favourite design.

Votes were cast either in person at the Shire Hall or via the Beacon's website, with 448 people in all having their say.

Flag A was the clear winner with 181 votes. Flag C came second with 126 votes (28 per cent), Flag B took third place with 75 votes (17 per cent), and Flag D came in fourth with 66 (15 per cent).

Andrew Tuggey, who was one of the key figures behind the competition, said: "The number of entrants (into the competition) was very pleasing; especially regarding school children.

"There has been a lot of interest in the town about the flag and competition, much more than is reflected in the amount of votes.

"It is great that it seems to have gathered a lot of enthusiasm for the flag. Lots of people have been talking about it."

Each of the four flags will go on display at the Shire Hall next week with an official unveiling and award ceremony for the winning design planned for Friday 31st July.

The new flag will be registered formally with the Flag Institute.
