Member of the Senedd for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, has welcomed the re-opening of the Inglis Bridge in Monmouth, and paid tribute to the work of Cllr Jane Lucas.

The Inglis Bridge in Monmouth had been closed since September 2024 due to safety concerns, causing access issues for local residents, school children and communities.

Following efforts by numerous groups and individuals, work to repair and re-open the bridge began.

The recent re-opening of the bridge in July saw numerous stakeholders come together to celebrate, but Mr Fox, and a significant amount of others noticed the lack of appreciation and recognition of the work undertaken by local County Councillor Jane Lucas, for her work in getting the bridge back.

Local MS for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, said: “Since the issue began in 2024, Cllr Lucas has worked tirelessly in getting residents onboard, leading a massive community petition that gathered over 6,500 signatures. Working alongside MCC and the MoD, Cllr Lucas helped to secure the funding and coordinate the repairs for the structure.”

There are further events planned to celebrate the re-opening, with a Community Picnic set for Friday 31st August at 2:30pm.

Mr Fox took the opportunity to thank Cllr Lucas for her efforts in Osbaston and the town of Monmouth, and encouraged everyone to utilise the excellent bridge, and take part in community events where possible.

“First and foremost, the bridge has re-opened, which is an excellent outcome for the efforts of all involved.

“It would be churlish to not acknowledge that a number of people and organisations were involved in the efforts to get this bridge re-opened, but I was very disappointed to see no mention at all of Cllr Lucas, and her efforts, in the official press release by Monmouthshire County Council.

“Cllr Lucas has worked tirelessly in getting the community on board, and working to get this bridge back. To get 6,500 signatures on any petition is no easy feat, and her efforts must be noted and recognised.

“Knowing Jane as I do, she won't be seeking praise or recognition for her role in this campaign. However, many people across Monmouth have been quick to point out the contribution she made, and I believe it's only right that her hard work and dedication are properly recognised.”

Local County Councillor for Osbaston, Jane Lucas added: “I’m delighted to see the Inglis Bridge reopened, a vital link for Monmouth, schoolchildren, families and walkers accessing local amenities.

“I launched a petition which attracted thousands of signatures, bringing the issue to the Government’s attention for the MoD to be able to carry out the work.

“I continued to work with the MoD and MCC, whilst keeping residents updated on progress until it was finished to a fantastic standard.

“This has been a real community campaign, and we are holding a Community Picnic on 31st August at 2:30pm on Vauxhall Field where everyone can cut the ribbon, take photos, join fete games, and enjoy music, I look forward to seeing lots of residents there.”
