Catherine Fookes MP has launched a new campaign to bring empty units in Monmouthshire's town centres back into use, starting with one of Monmouth's most prominent empty buildings.
The campaign will focus on identifying long-term empty properties and taking action to bring them back into use, helping to revitalise high streets across Monmouthshire.
To launch the campaign, Catherine has written to the owners of 20-22 Monmouth High Street – a building known to many local residents as the "pigeon poop building".
Catherine said: "Our high streets are the heart of our towns. But too many shops have sat empty for years, and they're making our town centres look neglected.
After speaking with businesses and residents across Monmouthshire, I know how important it is that we get these spaces back into use and looking their best again.”
The first focus of the campaign is 20-22 Monmouth High Street, which has stood largely empty for many years and has been deteriorating with plants growing out of it, and in one recent incident, the glass falling out of the windows.
Monmouthshire County Council has been in discussions with the building's owner regarding its future, and has been trying to make them act, but progress has been limited.
Catherine has now written directly to the owner of the building - which is a property company based in London - requesting a clear plan and timeline for the renovation of the property.
She added:"For years, this building has been left empty and has become a real eyesore in the centre of Monmouth. I've written directly to the owner asking for answers and a clear plan for the future of the building.
There won't be an overnight solution, but I'm determined to do everything I can, working with Monmouthshire County Council and local partners, to help get this building looking its best again and, hopefully, back in use.”
