THE Savoy Theatre in Monmouth has been announced as the Theatre of the Year on the Muddy Stilettos website following strong backing from the local community.

An 82 per cent vote in their favour led the long-standing theatre in good stead for winning this competition. The community were given until May 26 to vote for what theatre company in Wales they thought best deserved this award.

The Savoy is at the heart of the Monmouth community, having served the town since the 1640s where it was originally The Bell Inn and is located on the oldest working theatre sites in Wales.

The Savoy is used by many residents across the town, bringing people together and for many of them they shared a lot of fond memories there from attending events.

Upon receiving this award Director and General Manager Chris Ryde, said: “The Savoy is absolutely delighted to win The Theatre of the Year in the Muddy Stilettos nationwide Awards.

“We are grateful to all the people who voted to give us such an overwhelming success. To beat ten of the biggest and best equipped venues along the way is a testament to the affection people have for this unique building.”

Over the years The Savoy has carried out entertainment for people in the community such as drama, comedy, music, and films and have featured many notable performers including Kiki Dee, Rich Hall, Ardal O’Hanlon, Liza Goddard.

Muddy Stilettos Awards is a highly recognised annual competition which highlights local businesses. There are different categories including Best Café, Best Hair Salon and Best Boutique.

This year the awards reached 14 million people nationally over 12 weeks and had nearly half a million votes. This is their 13th year running across England, Wales and Scotland and it is free to enter for businesses .
