The Phoenix awards were presented at Chepstow Castle on the 26th June. The awards celebrate youths and youth workers in the area.

The evening was very well attended and it was heartwarming to hear young people having the confidence to stand in front of a crowd and talk about their experiences, no matter how difficult.

Many mentioned how volunteering and the opportunities given to them through study programmes led by Monmouthshire Youth Services have given them self conficence and life opportunities they would not otherwise have had.

Youth Community Project Officer, Clare Rogers said, "It has been an inspirational evening, highlighting the positive input the young people of Monmouthshire have in the community."

The Community Champion Award, which highlights excellence in volunteering and caring for others, went to Nicky Merrick.

A Personal Achievement Award went to Emily Jane Hayward for outstanding progress throught the Alternative Learning Pathway which gives young people pastoral and practical support with gaining qualifications and work experience.

The Young Person Of the Year, awarded to someone who has shown exceptional personal development, made an outstanding contrubution to the community, provided a positive role model and contributed positively to the lives of others, went to Ian Wheeler.

There were few dry eyes in the audience by the end of the awards, "I think that the Phoenix Awards was a success, celebrating Monmouthshire's young people and awarding them for all their great achievements, we have young people to be proud of throughout the county." said Sarah Fox from Monmouthshire Council.

The evening was rounded off by excellent music from Kelly Bryant and Jamie Summers then James Edinburgh from Chepstow Comprehensive School.
