SUMMER has arrived and schools across Monmouthshire have said if they are making any changes to uniform policies or making any other adjustments to help pupils stay cooler in the summer months.
With the the weather reaching high temperatures recently some schools have adjusted their uniform policies during the summer months to address temperature and comfort.
Mr David Edwards who is Haberdashers’ Monmouth School Senior Deputy Head Pastoral said: “The summer term is an important one for all of our students, and particularly those who are sitting public exams.”
“We want to ensure that they can perform at their best in exams and in class. We ensure that exam halls are well ventilated and relax the uniform requirements for all students when the weather is hot.”
“Students may choose not to wear their blazer or jacket and students, and some teachers also have identified other ways of keeping cool such as participating in the ice-bucket challenge to raise money for charity.”
At Haberdashers’ Monmouth School, sport is popular activity and in this weather, they say it is a joy and their enjoyment for rowing and playing cricket along with other sports is enhanced in this wonderful setting in the sunshine.
The school take care to ensure students are mindful of the damage which sun exposure can do, and they encourage regular use of sunscreen when outdoors.
Monmouth Comprehensive School’s headteacher Hugo Hutchison said: “We move to a summer uniform policy around the start of exam season until the end of the school year, which entails blazers being optional rather than compulsory.”
“Tailored shorts are an option for all students, all year round, as are short-sleeve shirts. We also strongly encourage students to bring refillable water bottles to school, in order to stay hydrated and to reduce the use of single- use plastics.”
