MONMOUTH has had its Fairtrade status renewed for the 13th year; and along with Fairtrade towns Chepstow, Abergavenny and Usk, it makes Monmouthshire the first county in Wales to be accorded a Fairtrade county.

A presentation was made on Monday evening (17th September) to Monmouth’s mayor, Councillor Terry Christopher by Bethia Smith, a member of the Monmouth Fairtrade Forum, certifying the town’s position after checks with traders and cafés ensured Fairtrade products are being used.

An updated guide for residents and visitors on the availability of Fairtrade products is now available and a twice-yearly newsletter is sent to all councillors and supporters of the forum. It is hoped to run a competition to design a Fairtrade coaster soon.

“We fund the purchase of Fairtrade fruit for the Summer Access to Play Scheme packed lunches, working alongside Transition Monmouth, local churches, the WI and Community Champions to deliver this idea” said Bethia.

Osbaston School is a Fairtrade school and the forum invites other schools to come on board the train to Fairtrade status.
