LAST Monday’s Christmas Market (2nd December) saw a quality entry of nine locally produced/presented cattle.
The overall championship was awarded to the 1st prized heifer by regular consigner Ian Pugh, pictured right. The outstanding 630kg heifer had been purchased at the Monmouthshire Livestock Centre in October 2018, when shown by the late Mr Rob Watkins, Penyparc. She went on to sell at £2,300 to Messrs Willis Butchers, Cwmbran. Messrs Willis also took the 1st prized steer and Reserve Championship from Messrs Parry, Williams & Bodily, selling at £1500 (595kg-252p/kg).
The 1st prized homebred award was taken by a superb Charolais steer 22-month-old, produced and shown by AE & ME Pritchard, Longtown. He was purchased at 299p/kg (500kg) by Mr Wayne Randell, Pontypool. butchers.
The 1st prized native award and winner of the Prydderch Rees Cup was GR Parry, Llandenny selling a Hereford heifer at 202p/kg with the 2nd prized from the same home at 207p/kg again for a Hereford heifer. Both heifers were purchased by Matthew Barratt of Mayfield Livestock Ltd.
The 2nd prized steer was shown by Mr Ian Pugh weighing in at 585kg and making 280p/kg to Weeks Wholesale Meat Co. Ltd, Cardiff. Messrs DM & CS Andrews sold the 2nd prized homebred beast, a Limousin heifer at 238p/kg (655kg).
