Monmouth is to host the Digital Past Convention in February 2013.
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales organises the convention every year at different venues throughout Wales.
Its arrival in Monmouth is a rare event for a small town. The important conference is usually held in a University town or city. Monmouth has been chosen for this honour because of recent international interest in Monmouthpedia.
The event is designed to promote the use of digital media in the heritage and tourism industry.
"Monmouth is leading the way in digital technologies and being asked to host this conference is a significant endorsment for the investment Monmouth has made in these technologies," says Mike Booth from the Shire Hall.
Being the first Wikipedia town, Monmouth is already on the world map as a technologically revolutionary town. The addition of free Wi-Fi throughout the town in September, facilitating the online following of the Blue Plaque Trail, reinforces the status of Monmouth as one of the most technologically advanced towns where heritage is concerned."
The conference lasts two days and attracts over 200 delegates. There will be keynote speeches and workshops throughout the two days attended by national and international heritage members.
Most events will be held in the Shire Hall and the Savoy Theatre will also be used as a venue. The organisers will also be taking advantage of the new town Wi-Fi to hold seminars outside too.
The digital revolution in Monmouth not only benefits visitors to the town but the introduction of fibre optic broadband also allows residents and local business' to move into the digital age.
