Young chess stars from across Wales gathered in Monmouth on 15th November for the prestigious Welsh Junior grand Prix.

Among them were 14 girls from Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls and Gilbert Inglefield House – between them they took away the majority of the trophies in the girls' category!

In the U8 contest, Amy Hughes won 3rd place, with Katherine Finch, Victoria Baker and Fay Blagborough playing excellent chess. There was a joint tie for 1st place in the U10 event between Selina Aziz, Gabrielle du Toit and Sarah Maher, with determined play from Saffron Herbert, Elizabeth Bennett, Pippa Higgs and Alexi Johnson.

There was similar domination in the U12 event, where Natasha Aziz won 1st place, closely followed by Tamara Herbert in 2nd and Victoria Johnson 3rd. Coach Mr Thomas said, "I can't remember such a successful day for the girls – this bodes well for the Welsh Girls' Chess Championships later this term."
