THE Love your Markets UK campaign ran from 14th to 28th May, aimed at raising the profile of markets and what they have to offer. Monmouth Markets, at the Bridge on Fridays and Saturdays and the Shire Hall Market on Saturdays, are involved with the scheme whilst supporting local charities. To this end, as part of the Love Your Markets UK campaign this month, they are holding a raffle this Saturday (31st May) with proceeds going to the newly formed local branch of the Parkinsons (Wales) charity. Parkinsons disease affects all sufferers in different ways. It is a progressive, neurological condition with no cure as yet. It affects most, if not all, of the body's functions and actions, caused by the degeneration of the nerve cell chemical, dopamine, which helps control movement and sleep. As a result Parkinson's sufferers have tremors, shake, walk slowly or with a typical shuffle. Modern drug therapy helps but is not a cure. Clive Jones, a sufferer with Parkinsons disease said: "Personally I find the tiredness and joint pain the biggest problem." To raise some funds for the newly formed support group simply buy a raffle ticket at the market on the day. The first meeting of the Monmouth Group of Parkinsons (Wales) will be held 18th June from 2-4pm at the Bridges Centre. Anyone wanting to know more about the group can get in touch with Jackie on 07743 930627 Prizes for the raffle will be donated by stall holders and include a wooden bird table, fishing rod and reel, barbecue pack of meat, tray of free range eggs and a portrait photograph. Anyone wanting to support this local cause can buy tickets on the day, Saturday 31st May, from stall holders at the Bridge and Shire Hall markets. The draw will take place on the same day at close of business.
